Cancer Explained

How can I prevent falls with nerve problems from cancer treatment?

Nerve problems from cancer treatment can affect your balance and make you more likely to trip or fall, so NCI describes several ways to help prevent falls.

You can make your home safer by having someone help you move rugs out of your path, putting rails on the walls and in the bathroom so you can hold on and balance, and putting bathmats in the shower or tub. Wearing sturdy shoes with soft soles helps, as does getting up slowly after sitting or lying down, especially if you feel dizzy.

It also helps to protect your hands and feet by wearing shoes inside and outside and checking your arms, legs, and feet for cuts or scratches every day, and to take extra care in the kitchen and shower—using potholders, being careful with knives, and asking someone to check the water temperature. Letting people help with difficult tasks and giving yourself more time can keep you safer too. Your healthcare team can tell you which precautions are most important for your situation.
