Cancer Explained

What are good bedtime habits during cancer treatment?

Good bedtime habits are one of the ways people being treated for cancer can manage sleep problems. The article suggests going to bed only when you feel sleepy, in a quiet and dark room and a comfortable bed. If you do not fall asleep, get out of bed and return to bed when you are sleepy again.

A few more habits can help. Stop watching television or using other electronic devices a couple of hours before going to bed. Don't drink or eat a lot before bedtime. It's important to keep active during the day with regular exercise, but exercising in the few hours before bedtime may make sleep more difficult.

These habits are part of a larger set of steps that can help you sleep better, which also includes treating problems that interfere with sleep (such as pain or diarrhea), trying cognitive behavioral therapy and relaxation techniques, and, if other strategies don't work, sleep medicine that your doctor may prescribe for a short time. Because good sleep supports your physical and mental health, it's worth telling your health care team if you're having trouble, so they can help you find what works for you.
