How many miracles have been recognized at Lourdes?
Seventy-one. That is the total the Church has recognized since the apparitions at Lourdes in 1858. Many millions of pilgrims have come in the years since.
The 71st was announced in December 2024. It concerned John Traynor, a Liverpool veteran of the First World War. He had lost the use of his right arm. He had seizures. Surgery in 1920 left both legs partly paralysed. His cure took place at Lourdes on 25 July 1923. Archbishop Malcolm McMahon of Liverpool proclaimed it on 8 December 2024. That was a century after the event, and long after Traynor had died.
You may see the figure given as 70. The sanctuary's main website has not been updated since the most recent case.
It is worth being precise about who declares what. The shrine's Medical Bureau and its International Medical Committee ask one question. Is the recovery unexplained in the present state of medical knowledge? That is the only finding the doctors make. Calling a cure a miracle is a separate step, taken by the person's own bishop. That is why the newest case was proclaimed in Liverpool rather than in France.
