Cancer Explained

Does family history affect ovarian cancer risk?

Yes. Women who have a family history of ovarian cancer in a first-degree relative (mother, daughter, or sister) are at an increased risk of ovarian cancer.

Hereditary ovarian cancer makes up about 20% of all cases of ovarian cancer. Some cases are linked to inherited changes in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. Fallopian tube cancer and peritoneal cancer may also be caused by certain inherited gene changes.

There are genetic tests that can detect these gene changes. They are sometimes done for members of families with a high risk of cancer. Your healthcare team can explain whether genetic testing might be helpful in your situation.
