Double your gift: employer matching

Many employers match the donations their employees make — often dollar for dollar, and sometimes 2:1. A few minutes with your HR team could turn your gift into twice as much free, plain-language cancer education, at no extra cost to you.

How it works

1. Ask if your employer matches

Email HR or search your company intranet for “matching gift” or “gift matching program.” Many large and mid-size employers match employee donations 1:1, and some match 2:1 — the same gift, doubled or tripled at no extra cost to you.

2. Make your gift

Donate to Cancer Explained as you normally would and keep your receipt or confirmation email — most matching programs ask for proof of the original donation.

3. Submit the match request

Fill out your employer's matching form (usually a short online form) with our nonprofit details. We're happy to confirm anything your employer's program asks about.

4. Your impact doubles

Once your employer approves the match, they send their gift directly to us — and your donation goes twice as far toward keeping every guide free.

Eligibility, stated plainly

We are National Cancer Information Foundation, and the IRS has recognized us as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) (EIN 42-3639534). Most employer matching programs require exactly that status to match a gift, so we’re now eligible for the vast majority of programs. If your employer’s program asks for a determination letter, email us and we’ll be glad to provide it.

Matching gift FAQ

What details will my employer's matching form ask for?

Most forms ask for the nonprofit's legal name (National Cancer Information Foundation), our EIN (42-3639534), a mailing address, and a contact email. Email us at [email protected] and we'll send everything your program needs.

Is Cancer Explained eligible for my employer's matching program?

We are National Cancer Information Foundation, a Wyoming public benefit nonprofit corporation recognized by the IRS as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) (EIN 42-3639534). Most employer matching programs require a finalized 501(c)(3) status to match a gift, and we now have one — so we're eligible for the vast majority of programs. A few employer programs have their own additional rules, so it's still worth checking with your HR team.

How do I find out if my company matches donations?

Ask your HR department or people team, or search your company intranet or benefits portal for “matching gifts.” Many companies also match gifts made by spouses and retirees, and some add a donation for hours you volunteer.

Is there a deadline to request a match?

Usually yes — many programs accept requests up to a few months or a year after the original donation, and some run on a calendar-year deadline. Check your employer's program rules, and submit sooner rather than later.

Does requesting a match cost me anything?

No. The matching gift comes from your employer, not from you. It typically takes a few minutes to submit the request form.

Need our nonprofit details?

We’ll send you our legal name, EIN, address, and anything else your employer’s matching form asks for — usually the same day.
